Fill in the blank Friday

Who doesn't love a good Friday? Even though I'm not working anymore, I do still love Fridays. Mostly because it means another week has passed & right now, I'm all for time moving along swiftly. :)

So, I saw this on The Little Things We Do & Angel Perry. I have a few minutes to kill, so I'll play along...

1 - I am currently obsessed with...The Decemberists new album The King is Dead. It's currently playing on my iPod and even my 5 year old is singing along.

2 - Today I am...restless because...the dino-boy was sick yesterday so we stayed home. He's back to his old self today so I think a trip to Fresh Market is in order.

3 - The age I am is...27. The age I feel is...17. Not saying I'm immature or anything, but I like to think of myself as young at heart. 27 is a "woman" but I still feel like a "girl".

4 - My favorite place is...Savannah, Georgia. The art, the history, the food. It has it all.

5 - Something I have been procrastinating is...my half-sewn apron. Don't know why. I love to sew.

6 - The last thing I purchased was...gas for #3.19 a gallon! On that note, perhaps I will stay home today.

7 - The thing I love most about my home is...its new dose of color. (See previous post).

Hope everyone has a SWEET weekend!!

Spray Paint. Not just for graffiti anymore

If there's anything I love about decorating my home, it's adding color. Most of the time, they don't match, but they do grab your attention, and that's really what's important isn't it?  Color just brightens my day & makes me smile.
So, I've been having a blast taking some of my thrift store and garage sale treasures & turning them into something fresh & beautiful.  It hasn't always been easy. This was my first real time using spray paint and I got off to a bit of a rocky start. I was too close, I was too far, it dripped, it did a weird bunching up thing. Grrrr... Truth be told, I almost gave up. But...my saving grace stepped in (you know, Ballistic Gypsy) & it all turned out pretty well. Fantastic, actually.

So, these were some of my finds...These were some garage sale picks. The small tray and gawdy candlesticks had a date with some spray paint. Muah-ha-ha!

And here they are now...
I love how fresh & funky these candlesticks turned out.

Cute little tray + candlestick from Goodwill + Super glue = Perfect jewelry dish for the bedside table.
Yet another great idea from my partner-in-crime. Thanks Becky!
And how about that color? Ahhh...so pretty.

Next up.
Remember that ugly mirror I got from GW a few weeks back? Well, this poor mirror almost didn't make it. After being stepped on & getting spray paint on the mirror part, it was on the verge of being in dumpster-land.

But after some serious TLC, it pulled through & turned out much better than I thought it would. In fact, I think it's my favorite. I love a good underdog story. :)

If you've ever spray painted before, then you know that once you get your hands on a can & see what a difference it can make, you begin to walk around your house & see what else needs a fresh look. So here's what happened to some of my poor victims...

A boring white canister to start & now POP!

That banana hanger is plum...bad lighting. Bleh. It's much prettier in person. And I love keeping my cookbooks in this now orange magazine holder.

This was an off-white bathroom shelf. Now with some black paint & pretty scrapbook paper, it really pops in my craft room.

Even though it hasn't always gone well, I refuse to give up spray painting. I've got my eye on some book shelves...

Beautiful weather vs Blogging

Hands down...Beautiful weather wins!

I'm lucky enough to live in weather heaven. We get our spring in February. I swear I could never live in Seattle. I need my Vitamin D too much.

So, what I'm really trying to say is the blog may suffer a bit while I'm taking the opportunity to celebrate spring.

But look at this cute sandy toes!

Dino Party - Roar.

In case you haven't noticed yet, my 5 year old is a wee bit into dinosaurs. In the fall, we went all out for his birthday & threw him a big dino bash. I spent a lot of time putting everything together, which wasn't easy with a 2 month old baby at home. I really wanted everything to be authentic, instead of just buying the coordinating party packages from Party City (which is what I did for his 4th birthday).

I started off with the invites...

I just went with something simple.
The inside says...
"Calling all Paleontologists! J is turning 5! Stomp on over for some fossil digging fun!"

Then, I put together the goody bags for his guests.

These bookmarks were super easy to put together. I just printed them out on cardstock & then used self-sealing laminate cards meant for photos. A hole punch & some ribbon & voila!

I also threw in a CD compiled of some of our favorite dinosaur songs which we played throughout the party.

These little dinosaur candies (sorry the picture isn't very good) were super easy to make. You can find the meltable candy & molds at any main craft store. I thought they were just too cute, I couldn't resist!

The party table...

Everything for Herbivores & Carnivores

To keep the kids entertained (which is essential when you are expecting 12 preschoolers in your house) we set out a little craft table in the backyard.

Dinosaur Decorating

And look at their cute creations

And Just so everyone can find it :)

Overall, the party was a success!
We even found a local reptile handler to put on a live reptile show for the kids! Yes, that's right, I had giant snakes in my house.

Notice who is NOT holding the giant snake.

Stylish Blogger Award

Wow. First I'd like to thank the Academy...

Hehe. just kidding.

In all seriousness, BIG thank you to Kristen over at Just Live Simply for choosing me to be a part of this Stylish Blogger Award. It feels good to finally be a part of this awesome Blogosphere! I just love all of the great people and creative blogs I've encountered. Reading everyone's ideas, thoughts & creations, has really inspired me, so thank you!
(Insert orchestra music)

So I guess to play along with this award I just have to post 7 things about myself that you probably don't know. Then, I get to pick 15 other stylish bloggers to share the award with. :) Fun!

First things first...about me.

1. I'm kinda obsessed with mermaids. Don't know when it started, but for the longest time I have been collecting them and well...secretly wishing I was one. ;)

2. I have an irrational fear of zombies. Vampires, werewolves...I can handle, but there's something about those creepy brain-eaters that give me the heebie-jeebies. Zombieland has been on my DVR for months because everyone says it's hilarious, but I just can't bring myself to watch it.

3. I lived in Germany with my husband for 3 years. And it was amazing!

4. I'm a little bit addicted to cloth diapers.

5. I'm currently working on my degree to become an English teacher.

6. I've grown to adore dinosaurs as much as my 5 year old. :)

7. I am a total beach bum.

Well, that was fun & not as easy to come up with as I thought it would be. Now for my personal favorite 15 blogs that I think deserve the Stylish Blog Awards, in no particular order...

1. Raw Potatoes
2. Mother Nature Mom
3. The Cobia Family
4. Cupcate & Shannanigans
5. All Things Kate
6. The Sewing Dork
7. Night Owl Crafting
8. Household 6 Diva
9. Fussy Monkey Business
10. Whimsy Lane
11. A Blog a Day While You're Away
12. The Bird's Papaya
13. The Rubber Punkin
14. The Polka Dot Chair
15. Trees Will Bend

And of course, if you haven't checked out Just Live Simply, you should!
She is so creative & I'm jealous of her adorable house. :)
Thanks again Kristen!

Terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day

Have you ever had one those days where it feels like nothing can possibly go your way? You know those days, usually involving the insurance company or DMV, where it feels like it takes every inch of energy you have to get one small task completed. And just when you think you couldn't take anything else, you spill soda all over yourself in the car. Really universe, really?! Well, today has been one of those days for me.

On days like this, there are a few special habits I have to try to boost my morale. Whether it be catching up on useless celebrity gossip, enjoying Phineas & Ferb with my 5 year old, or watching funny videos online, I make sure to take a small part of the day strictly to de-stress and relax. The dirty dishes & backed-up laundry will be there in an hour.

Lucky for me, last night's Superbowl commercials are now posted online for my de-stressing enjoyment.
Superbowl Ads
My personal favorite...the "Reply-all Bridgestone" commercial. *chuckle*

What habits do you have to lighten the mood after a awful, no good, very bad day?

The name of the game this month has been SIMPLIFY! Lately it has literally felt like my house was bursting at the seams.

I'm slowly taking it one room at a time.

This is just a start in the kitchen, but I just love how simple it looks. It's so nice having my most used ingredients (sugar, salt, pepper & Olive Oil) handy right there on the counter without looking cluttered.

Just a small piece of my craft/dining room that I organized last week. Got those kitchen canisters at Target on clearance last year and they work great for all those little sewing tools that make a cluttery mess. How much do you love that plaque?!

And while I was in the craft room, I decided the ironing board desperately needed a makeover. Goodbye boring...

Hello snazzy!!

That was the curtain panel I got from Goodwill last week. And I still have much more left...maybe a camera strap cover is in order. Hmm...

And might I recommend A Fine Frenzy as the perfect sewing room soundtrack.
So relaxing & fun :)
